Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum vision applies to all our young people, regardless of background, gender, sexual orientation or ability.
Our young people will develop a life-long love of learning through our rich, broad and balanced curriculum and expert delivery.
All students at Heworth Grange School are without exception entitled to a world class education that is holistic, ambitious and aspirational.
It is vital that we prepare our young people so that they are empowered to become engaged positive and respectful citizens through a dedicated focus on professional development.
We are responsible for ensuring our young people are confident to pursue ambitious next steps in education, employment or training which will support their future careers.
Knowledge and skills:
Through our curriculum, students:
- Build knowledge and understand how concepts and skills link between topics and subjects - The study of a language encompasses the study of another culture’s history, geography, religion, festivals and traditions.
- Develop confidence in communication skills and have the opportunity to critically question and debate - Improve students’ oracy so that they can express themselves with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation, thus improving their confidence and fluency when communicating their own language.
- Develop a love of reading and the skills to read fluently, having the opportunity to explore wider significant and exclusive texts - Discover and develop an appreciation of foreign sources and authentic sources in the language studied
- Learn to self-regulate and work independently as well as collaboratively - pair work, group work and games.
- Learn about the world around them and inclusive historical contexts - Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of other cultural forms, such as music and film, in the language studied - Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources - Understand the importance of diversity and recognise that other languages and cultures are equally valid.
- Will have the opportunity for deep thinking and to get into their ‘flow’ - Write a varying length and for varying audiences.
- Develop strong mathematical fluency - work with numbers, graphs and surveys and look for patterns in the study of grammar.

GCSE Spanish
Overview
A foreign language is not just another GCSE grade – it is a concrete and demonstrable life skill, like being able to type or to drive a car, and it is a skill that is highly valued by employers. A skill in languages can be vital for many career paths: there are some jobs where it’s an integral part, somewhere it is a useful bonus and others where it is just an advantage because it indicates a general level of ability and an open outlook. One thing that you can be sure of – it is never a disadvantage to have studied a language.
Success in languages forms a vital part of the English Baccalaureate qualification.

The GCSE course covers the following topic areas:
