Spanish
Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum vision applies to all our young people, regardless of background, gender, sexual orientation or ability.
Heworth Grange aims to produce confident, capable and articulate linguists, who can work independently across the four skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, using appropriate vocabulary, tenses and complex structures, whilst expressing opinions and offering justifications on a wide range of topics.
We aim to produce a broad curriculum with flexible pathways through the key stages to allow students to maximise their attainment by developing the skills and talents that they already possess.
Students are provided with a well-planned and challenging curriculum, which sets high expectations for learners, regardless of their ability. Students can achieve and be successful in lessons. In the classroom, pupils are encouraged to be resilient, understanding that learning from their mistakes is crucial to success.
Language learning is themed around relevant topics and ensures that, the appropriate vocabulary; grammatical structures and linguistic skills are introduced and revisited at regular intervals, throughout students’ learning experience.
The Spacing and interleaving of skills and vocabulary are evident across our schemes of learning and our curriculum gradually introduces increasing levels of complexity over time, to stretch and challenge students.
We aim to generate students with high aspirations, resilience and independence so that they can maximise the opportunities they are given to progress both with their language learning and in life in general, broadening their horizons and cultural experiences simultaneously.
European Day of Languages is celebrated each year to reinforce positive ideas around diversity and difference. Embedding the notion that language learning and the secondary skills, which are encompassed within this, are important.
We aim to develop an awareness and understanding of Spain, Hispanic countries and their people and culture as seen in HT6 lessons.
MFL staff at Heworth recognise their role in ensuring the quality of the curriculum offer and understand that outstanding teaching and learning is at the heart of a world- class curriculum.

GCSE Spanish
Overview
A foreign language is not just another GCSE grade – it is a concrete and demonstrable life skill, like being able to type or to drive a car, and it is a skill that is highly valued by employers. A skill in languages can be vital for many career paths: there are some jobs where it’s an integral part, somewhere it is a useful bonus and others where it is just an advantage because it indicates a general level of ability and an open outlook. One thing that you can be sure of – it is never a disadvantage to have studied a language.
Success in languages forms a vital part of the English Baccalaureate qualification.
