On Tuesday 14th July we had the pleasure of attending the Gateshead School Sport Awards at the Dryden Centre.
At the ceremony Cameron Sneddon (Year 8) was awarded the Sports Achiever- Stepping Up award for his rapid progress in Rugby League. Cameron was introduced to Rugby League in PE and through a school/club link with Gateshead Storm he started to attend extra-curricular clubs and play in fixtures for the school. Cameron then started attending training sessions with the Storm and has now become a regular in their youth team. He is making great progress and he was delighted to receive his award on Tuesday night.
The PE department also won a School Sport Innovation award for Extra-Curricular activity. The award was based around the work that has been done through Futsal this year with breakfast clubs, recreational leagues, inter-house and inter-school competitions all focused on trying to improve attendance, punctuality and behaviour of our students.
We also had three students who did not win their category but who will receive a ‘highly commended’ certificate for their work this year. They are:
Luke Birkbeck (Year 11) Young Sport Leader: volunteered over 25 hours of his own time to run extra-curricular Futsal leagues, as captain took responsibility for selecting the Year 11 Football team, completed his FA Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Futsal and worked with Gateshead Futsal Club in FA community leagues.
Amy Chapman (Year 11) Young Sport Achiever: excels in sport playing county cricket for Durham Cricket Club and county Netball for Tyne & Wear. Also took responsibility for organising the Year 11 Netball team and running training sessions for her peers. She also recorded maximum practical marks on her GCSE PE course and has also been part of the inaugural HG Leadership Academy.
Chris McKitten (Year 11) Sporting Spirit: plays a high level of mixed disability football representing teams at local, county, regional and national level. This year he has been selected for the England U16 and England U18 mixed disability squads. In addition to this Chris has an excellent record of PE participation and a fantastic attitude towards sport.
